Privacy Policy
Last updated: 29 October 2026 · Applies to OMapHK for Android (package com.mememe.omaphk)
The short version. OMapHK is an offline map with no account, and neither your location nor your tracks are uploaded to us, because there is no server to upload them to. The app shows small banner ads, provided by Google AdMob, in the Offline maps manager (including while a map downloads) and in the saved-tracks dialog — never over the map, while routing or while recording. After you answer a consent form, the app also sends anonymous usage statistics to Google Analytics (Firebase): that it was opened, how long the session lasted, the device model, the app version and a random app-instance identifier. It never includes your location, tracks, saved places or searches, and it stays off if you decline.
Who we are
OMapHK is published on Google Play by an independent developer. This policy explains what the app does with your information; it does not cover Google Play itself, which is governed by Google's own policies.
What the app accesses, and why
| Access | Why | Leaves your device? |
|---|---|---|
| Precise or approximate location | To show where you are, to suggest the map for your area, to compute walking routes from your position, and to record tracks while you walk. You can grant approximate location only, and the app still works. | No |
| Notifications | To show the ongoing notification that a track is being recorded — Android requires it while location is used in the background. | No |
| Internet | To download maps and map updates you choose, to request ads, and — only after you agree — to send anonymous usage statistics. | See below |
| Files you open | To read a GPX track you choose to open, and to write a GPX file when you export or share a track. | Only where you send it |
What is stored on your device
- Recorded tracks and imported GPX files, in the app's private storage.
- Saved places, in the app's private storage.
- Downloaded offline maps and any map updates.
- The bundled elevation data used for Hong Kong hill shading and climb profiles.
- Small preferences, such as day or night map mode.
This data is readable only by OMapHK. Deleting the app, or clearing its storage in Android settings, removes all of it. Because we never receive this data, we cannot recover it for you — export any track you want to keep.
What leaves your device
- Map downloads and updates (optional). When you download a map or accept an update, the app fetches map files from a public mirror of OpenAndroMaps. As with any download, that server sees your IP address and the usual request headers. No location, track or identifier from OMapHK is included.
- Sharing you start yourself. If you share a track or a place, Android's share sheet hands the file to the app you choose. What happens next is covered by that app's policy.
- The banner ads (Google AdMob). When you open the Offline maps manager (including while a map downloads) or the saved-tracks dialog, the app requests one banner ad from Google. Google receives the request together with device information: the advertising identifier (or, on Android 12 and later, the all-zero identifier if you have deleted it), the IP address, and coarse device and app details. That is what any ad request carries; the app itself adds nothing — no location, no track, no saved place. See Google's advertising policy for how Google uses it.
- Anonymous usage statistics (Google Analytics for Firebase), only after you agree. Once the consent form has been answered in your favour, the app reports anonymous usage to Google: that it was opened, when the session started and how long it lasted, the app version, the device model and Android version, the country inferred from your connection's IP address, and a random app-instance identifier. That identifier is not the advertising ID — analytics is configured not to read it — and the data is not used to personalise ads. Your location, tracks, saved places and searches are never part of it. See Firebase's privacy information.
There is no crash reporter and no account system. AdMob and Google Analytics for Firebase are the only components that can send anything off the device. Analytics ships switched off, is switched on only by the consent answer, and stops again if that answer is withdrawn.
Ads, analytics and your choices
- Where the law requires it, the app shows a Google consent form on first launch. No ad is requested and no usage statistic is sent until that form has been answered; if you decline, both stay switched off.
- You can change your answer whenever you like: open the map's tools menu and choose Privacy options. Withdrawing consent stops analytics immediately and prevents any further ad request.
- You can change your ad choices at any time in Android: Settings → Google → Ads, where you can delete the advertising ID or turn off ad personalisation. Both apply to every app on the phone, including this one.
- The app shows no ads over the map: banners exist only in the Offline maps manager and the saved-tracks dialog, so walking, routing and recording are unaffected.
Third-party components
- Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, under the Open Database License.
- Map rendering by Mapsforge, with the Elevate map style.
- Elevation data from SRTM, which is in the public domain.
- Map files built and hosted by OpenAndroMaps.
- Usage analytics by Google Analytics for Firebase, only after consent.
These components run inside the app on your device; none of them reports to us.
Children
OMapHK is a navigation tool intended for adults and is not directed at children. It does not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children.
Your choices
- Deny or revoke location in Android settings; the map still works, you just lose the blue dot, routing from your position and track recording.
- Turn off notifications in Android settings; recording still works, but Android will make the ongoing notification less prominent.
- Decline a map download or update; any maps already on your device stay as they are.
- Change or withdraw your consent at any time in the map's tools menu → Privacy options.
- Clear the app's storage or uninstall it to delete everything the app has stored.
Changes to this policy
This policy is updated before a version that changes what leaves the device is released, and the date at the top changes with it.
